We wanted to make sure we visited every state in Australia whilst we are here, so we drove from Canberra back down to Melbourne so we could catch a flight to Hobart, the capital of Tasmania! We had to be up super early to park our car, so by the time we arrived in Hobart we were ready for a nap, even though it was only 9.30am. We got a taxi to our hotel in the city centre, then headed out for brunch - we found a cafe on the corner of the main shopping area and I had the most amazing pancakes! The coffee woke us up a bit, so we wandered around the main part of town, looking in a couple of the shopping arcades, before heading down to the waterfront to see the harbour. It's a really nice city, really pretty with loads going on, but it doesn't feel at all rushed! By this point we'd had enough for the day, so we went back to the hotel to relax and ordered room service - the first time I've ever done that! The next day we were feeling a bit more refreshed, which was good as we were going on a day trip. We were picked up at 8am and we were driven to the top of Mount Wellington - it's only 20 minutes outside of the city centre, but it's a mountain 1270m above sea level. It had amazing views over the city and surrounding area (until the cloud came in), and it was absolutely freezing at the top - only 2 degrees! After we'd taken in the views we headed halfway down the mountain where we went on a 1.5 hour walk - I found it really hard, clambering over rocks with the edge of the mountain right next to you and nothing to stop you if you fell! There were some great views (when we weren't looking at our feet), but I was quite glad when we finished! From there we went back into Hobart to grab a bite to eat along the waterfront, and then we were taken to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary - we got to hand feed kangaroos, and we went on a tour where we got to stroke wombats and koalas, and of course we got to see some tasmanian devils! They are actually really cute, but extremely loud. After we'd finished looking at all the animals (including a cockatoo that is 100 years old!) we visited Richmond, a really picturesque town which has the oldest bridge in Australia. It also had an old fashioned sweet shop that served really good ice cream. The next day we were exploring on our own again, and we headed to MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art). we took a ferry from central Hobart down the river to get there, and there were some really good views during the 30 minute cruise. Once we got there we went into the museum, which had some really interesting Ancient Egyptian artefacts, and then lots of modern art which we didn't think that much of - none of it made any sense! Luckily there was a wine bar, so we sampled some tasmanian beer/wine after looking around. The next day we were back to exploring central Hobart. First of all we went to Battery Point, which is the oldest and apparently most expensive suburb in Hobart - there were some lovely old cottages and views of the river. We walked along the coast back to Salamanca Place, then went to look around the Australian Wooden Boat Festival which had just started - there was quite a lot to see and it was actually quite interesting to see all the boats in the harbour - we even saw 2 boats nearly crash! In the afternoon we headed away from the crowds and did a bit more shopping in the centre of town. The next day was our last day in Hobart and we only had the morning to look around, so we went down to the Salamanca Markets - they stretched from practically our hotel all the way down to the seafront and there were absolutely loads of stalls to look at! They had loads of locally made items, and lots of different food too - Joel had a wallaby burrito! After looking around the markets we had to head back to the hotel to catch the shuttle bus to the which gave us another mini tour of the town before we crossed the Tasman Bridge and got to the airport. We're definitely glad that we decided to fly over to Tasmania, it was well worth it!
