After our week in Melbourne we headed North to visit Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory - according to our guidebooks it's a place a lot of visitors miss out due to a lack of personality, but we have really enjoyed our time here! On the drive up we stopped for lunch in the Victorian town of Glenrowan, which is the town where Ned Kelly was eventually captured - it's full of old buildings and themed cafes, but the food was really good. We then had a quick drive around the city in the evening once we arrived, but after 7 hours of driving we were too tired to do much exploring. On our first full day we went into the city centre to have a look around - there's a huge shopping centre, and a big pedestrian shopping area full of sculptures and art installations, it's quite a nice place to walk around. We had lunch at a place called Gus' Cafe, which is apparently a Canberra institution and served very good food. In the afternoon we headed across the lake to visit Parliament House where we had a free guided tour - it was really interesting to learn about how the Australian government works, and we got to see all the main rooms inside the building. The next day we got coffee at Lonsdale Street Roasters, another Canberra favourite according to the guide book, before heading to the Australian War Memorial - it's a huge museum covering Austrlia's involvement in conflicts since the First World War, and there is also a huge memorial listing the names of all the soldiers who have died in combat along with the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier. We had a free guided tour here as well where we learnt about Australia's involvement in the Second World War which was really interesting, especially as I've covered this topic so much while studying history at school but never really focused on the war in the Pacific. After the museum we went down to the lake to have a look at the Captain Cook Memorial Jet, which is a huge water jet that shoots 6 tonnes of water into the air! The lake is really pretty and covers a huge area right in the centre of Canberra. For our third day we visited the Royal Australian Mint to see where they make all of the country's coins, before heading back into the centre where we had coffee and the most delicious cakes at a little Italian cafe - Canberra has really good food! In the afternoon we ventured up the Black Mountain, just outside of the city centre, to go up the Telstra Tower - it had great 360 degree views over the city and the lake! We finished off our stay in the capital with a visit to the National Museum of Australia on our last day - it had really interesting exhibits about the history of the country, and we also watched a video in a revolving cinema which was cool but a bit weird. Canberra isn't the biggest city we've been to by any means, and it doesn't quite have the buzz of Melbourne, but it's a really nice place to visit, if you get the chance you should definitely spend a few days here learning more about Australia and enjoying the food!
