Today we drove 20 minutes down the coast to visit the city of Fremantle, which although technically a different city is actually now part of the sprawling Perth suburbs. It has a very different feel to Perth though, very bohemian with very Victorian style buildings, which made it really nice to visit. We started off with a visit to Fremantle Prison, which was a working prison up until 1991 (when we were born!). We joined a guided tour which explained about the history of the prison and took us to all the main buildings within it, it was really interesting to learn all about it. There were other tours that we could have done, but we were getting pretty hungry so we decided to head down into the city centre. We stopped off at Fremantle Markets, which are really amazing! They are in old Victorian market buildings, and you can buy everything from fresh fruit to Indian takeaways to Aboriginal art to clothes in there, it was great to look around and there was so much choice of great food! After grabbing a bite to eat we headed out to Cappucino Strip, a really long road full of cafes and restaurants, where we stopped off for a drink and to have a look through some guidebooks we had picked up. Suitably recharged, we headed off to the Round House, which was another old prison building that had great views over the marina. We then had a walk around the harbour, again filled with loads of awesome looking bars and restaurants, before heading over to the WA Shipwreck Gallery, which is a free museum with loads of info about all the shipwrecks (surprise surprise) that have occurred along the WA coastline (there have been a lot!). We were pretty tired by this point, so we headed back to our hostel, where we managed to book a few nights in a campsite for next weekend when we are heading North on our coastal roadtrip, first stop Jurien Bay which is a couple of hours north of Perth. We've still got almost a week here in Perth though, and there is plenty more to see, including a whale watching trip that we have booked for Monday which we are really looking forward to!
