Spent the day at the Broome Races. Typical country race meeting with lots of local characters, a dirt track, some ordinary horses, some dolled up ladies and a lot of grog.
Not long after arriving at the track and setting up a table on the shady lawn, we caught up with Kim and Julie Day who both taught in Whyalla in the 80s. They are travelling with another couple and are doing a similar trip to us but in the opposite direction.
We also spent the day with Steve and June from Perth. We met them in the Palm Grove Caravan Park and enjoyed their company for the day.
Punting wasn't hugely successful although the girls did have a few collects early and Hanno's brother Michael I gave us a couple of winners. There were 6 races on the card in Broome and after 5 races and $10 on each race I was without a collect when I placed $10 on Elusive Luck at 6s in the last. Earnie the bookie was offering 5s but when I mentioned the owner of Pt Smith Caravan parks name (Steve Appleby) to Earnie he up it to 6s. Any way Elusive Luck came good and I managed to break even on the locals and when combined with the $10 winnings from Michaels, tips I actually finished up on the day. That is unless you count the $90 on beer!
As the races finished the place really kicked into gear with a live band and two up providing entertainment well into the night.
Carol in particular really got into the swing of things. The police and security guards being particularly pleased to hear that she was rating their performance very highly! "All seems pretty secure" was the quote of the night.
Home by about 9:00pm after a really good day.
