Cuba - More than old cars
Today we headed for the St. Austell area and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Again our GPS system wanted to take us on a weird route but we are learning to ignore some of the directions. In fact some of the websites of the places we visit warn us to ignore GPS systems directions and take other routes as we get closer.
These gardens were rediscovered about 25 years ago. They became forgotten (lost) after WWI when the workforce went off to war and unfortunately many of the men did not return. In fact the whole 1,000 acre estate they were on became neglected over the years until the gardens were found by accident. While we missed the best time of year for them (spring) they were still good.
As well as some garden sculptures there were some areas that were representative of gardens in other countries, one being of New Zealand. They did quite a good job of it as well.
July 1 of this year marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and in one of the fields of wild flowers they had sown Flanders poppy seeds which were now in bloom throughout the field. As well there was a mobile memorial in place dedicated to those in the immediate area who had lost their lives during this battle.
There is quite a bit to see here and it is an evolving work in progress.
