Cuba - More than old cars
Before heading off to Truro we wandered up to Buckland Abbey, the home of Sir Francis Drake. He bought the already converted Abbey with the treasure he had plundered from the Spanish. Quite a large place for a family home as you might imagine. Enjoyed wandering through it which also included seeing a self portrait of Rembrandt. The signature on it had been misspelt and this has resulted in some controversy over its authenticity. It looks like it is now accepted by the majority as being authentic but of course there remain some sceptics.
From the Abbey we headed off to Princetown and the Dartmoor Prison Museum next door to the 200 year old Dartmoor prison. The prison was originally built to house captives from the Napoleonic Wars We had to drive through the moors to get there and with the mist/fog in the area one could but imagine how eerie it would be to be walking through it and near a prison to boot. This is still a working prison although no longer a high security one. Lots of stories of past inmates, escapes and incidents in the museum. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures as some days they have inmates working in or near the museum. The prison is due to close around 2025
Back through the moors we headed for Truro where we are positioning ourselves for a week to enable us to see the surrounding areas.
The next day (Sunday) we headed into the town for a look around and visit the information centre - it was closed! Nearby was the Cathedral - known as a church within a church. Back in the 13th century it was the St. Mary Church but when the cathedral was built on the site they kept part of the church within the cathedral. This is probably one of the newest cathedrals we have ever visited. One thing quite different was the art exhibition inside the cathedral. Produced by Imran Querishi it is entitled ' After which I am no more I, and you are no more you'. It is 30,000 sheets of (screwed up) paper each printed with a photograph of a piece of art in Toronto. Unusual to say the least but then that can be art.
We then wandered around and followed the river down to its mouth. Obviously a very tidal river so not much to look at. Back to the house and an early night.
