Cuba - More than old cars
Rest day behind us we are off today to see St. Pauls Cathedral and go to a play. Anne had had a short visit to the Cathedral once before but Bruce had not been inside. An amazing unique cathedral. Surprising was the number of tributes to war dead, the leaders and heros and various battles and wars. Often in cathedrals Crypts are not open to the public but not the case here. We decided we needed a bit of exercise so decided to climb up to the Whispering (274 steps), Stone (119 steps) and Golden (152 steps) Galleries. As you would expect the staircases became narrower and narrower. We did not do the climb to the last gallery as we were running out of time and YES it was a stretch on the thighs and calves for our first outing of the trip. We could have done it though. As with such climbs the trip (hopefully not) down is in some ways more difficult than the climb up. Have included a picture proving we got to the Stone Gallery for you doubters.
Then it was 30 minute walk to Shaftsbury Avenue and the Gielgud Theatre where we saw "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time". We headed up Fleet Street then on to The Strand then into a taxi as we appeared to have missed a turn or 2 or 3. After 15 minutes, mostly caught up in traffic, we finally managed to arrive in time to collect our tickets and take our seats. Really nice old theatre we had a good view of the stage from somewhere up near the roof. Climbing steps appeared to be the plan for the day. The story line and the production were great and the acting was similarly very good. The stage was highly technical and was explained to us after the play was over. We have to say however that the seats were the most uncomfortable we had experienced in any theatre (or sporting enivironment for that matter) that we have experienced. Can only think you get what you pay for and they want us to sit closer to the action next time for a higher ticket price. Anyway it did not detract from the play.
Down to Picadilly Square area for an early dinner and off to the underground for our trip back to Harrow. The underground as most of you will know is really good in London albeit quite expensive. It is only a 20 minute walk from where we are staying and is typically no further a walk to anywhere we are planning to go.

Sarah We went up to the whispering gallery too & then on to next gallery but that was enough for me, my knees were like jelly & I felt Sick so John went on up to the top & I went down but felt very proud, nothing eltsfor the rest of our trip seemed half so scarey any more. I really wanted to see that play but ran out off time. The stage looked amazing can't wait to hear about it when you get back. Happy adventures xxx
Gael Sounds wonderful. However, after all that excitement and adventure for one day you'll be needing another rest day! Keep having fun!
Roslyn Your knees and hips are getting a workout....good on you. Love the pics
Allison Lovely to read about my old home city...the views from the top of St Paul's are great...can you name the walky talky, gherkin, shard etc?! We have done the cathedral twice as this year we let Katie pick where to go in London on one of our days in there and she picked St Paul's even though she had done it before....she loves the big climb up, oh to have young legs!
