Dawson Creek, British Columbiato Toad River, British Columbia-422 miles
72o & Cloudy
Day 65
We started on our trek along the Alaskan Highway. After the first couple of hours the high prairies and foothills gave way to the Canadian Rockies. The peaks were breathtaking.Every view was a masterpiece. My problem was not guardrails, a large RV, and no shoulders to speak of on the sides of the road.I must have said "H-U-G-H slooow down" as my sphincter muscle began to work overtime. The drive only got more difficult.I kept taking pictures, closing my eyes, yelling "sloooow down" and commenting on what idiot thought RV's should be allowed on the highway, all in the same minute.
There was construction on the highway. There was no room for the traffic, let alone construction equipment. Then throw in blinding dust.I felt sorry for Hugh; he drove as I squealed. This construction took place so high up we were above the tree line, and on the side of a sear cliff. When you thought you could not handle any more, the Big Horned sheep decided to cross the road.It was beautiful, terrifying, and we have to do it again on the way back……Whoa!
We arrived at Toad River about 5:30pm and were exhausted.Hugh from driving & listening to me and I from being scared half out of my wits.
The accommodations were very rustic. We got take out at the lodge. We had great beef stew. The biggest generator I've ever seen services the lodge restaurant, and the RV Park.It serenaded us all night with its constant hum.
We went for a walk around the small lake behind the Toad River Lodge. We saw two female moose feeding. It was beautiful!
