We had read a lot about the ruins in My Son which were an hours drive away from Hoi An. A lot of the things we read were about people that had taken a trip from their hotel, they said after the eventually got there they only had an hour to look round which wasn't long enough. Other people had said get yourself there by scooter and you get a lot more time to explore and you get to see the Vietnamese countryside. So we decided today that we would rent a scooter and visit My Son ruins. After breakfast we got a bag together and went to rent a scooter from a lady close to our hotel. Everywhere else we have ridden a scooter has been so relaxed there has never been a need to wear a helmet, here was different. We got two helmets, they weren't the best fit but at least we had them on, and we set off. It didn't take long before we missed our turning out of Hoi An but we seemed to find another further on which worked just the same. We went on some major roads which we haven't done before on the scooter but we were fine. The people we read about before hand who said the views of the countryside were great were absolutely right. We stopped every now and again to take photographs but it was very hard to capture. After around an hour and a half we found the turn off to the town after which the ruins would be there. We stopped for a drink and James got something to eat. We sat in a little cafe where they hardly spoke any English, they brought questions written in a piece of paper and a list of what they had, written in English. The guy was so impressed with James the he brought his youngest child and sat him next to him to take his photograph. Then sat himself there and took a photograph of them both. On the way out we made sure we got a photograph of James and the guy too. We hopped back on the scooter and rode the last few miles, there was a stop to buy tickets and then another drive to what looked like a building site. It had two cafes on either side then you had to walk across a bridge over the building site to get to the first part of the ruins. They were pretty amazing! There is quite a lot left of them but they have been grown over by plants and moss. The weather was extremely hot today so while there were a few people looking round the first part of the ruins we sat at a bench in the shade. Whilst we were sat there I saw some sort of lizard run up a tree, I have never seen anything like it before. It had a bright blue head and a green body, James missed it but then a little later it came to a tree closer where he saw it. We were both fascinated. The ruins had got quieter so we had a good look around and then moved onto the other areas, it was really impressive. When we had finished we got back on the scooter and headed back to the hotel, it seemed a little easier this time. It was around 5.30pm when we got back to Hoi An and we were hungry so we went to our favourite restaurant while we had the bike, it was as good as always. We then went back to the hotel.
