Brenton Kovacs's Travels
6th and 7th
Nothing to talk about for the last few days. I have laid low, stayed warm while trying to shake off this cold i have.
8th
Feeling a little better this morning. The bus picks me up at 9am and we arrive at Keflavik Airport at 10.30am. Its a rather bleak morning. The snow is falling, visibility is down to 100 metres, the wind is howling and its pitch black. Our Plane is late so we dont arrive at Oslo on time, and i am sure i will miss my connecting flight to Tromso. Anyway i collect my bag and check in. I am told the Tromso plane is late as well, so i wont miss it. Thats a relief.
I arrive at the City Hotel Apartments at around 8pm. The room i have is very small but its ok for 1 person. I will wait till tomorrow before venturing out.
9th
I dont wake till 8.30am, must have been tired. I open the curtain and am surprised that the eastern horizon has some light so early in the day. The western horizon is black. For December and January, Tromso does not see the sun. It does not break over the horizon for 2 whole months.
So i wander down to the supermarket to get some stuff for breakfast. Now while eating breakfast i am searching the internet on how to see the lights in Tromso. There has to be another way to see them without having to pay up to $200 for a 6 hour guided tour.
Well Wikitravel tells me that the local people just head up the hill to the reservoir. So i search some more and find a blog which confirms that the reservoir is the go.
Now as its only a 2k walk from the apartment, i think i will go there now while there is some light. At least i will know the way for when i return tonight.
Anyway its a really nice walk, it might be -5c, but i am really rugged up, and dont feel the cold at all. I even start to sweat a little as the climb steepens.
I walk around the frozen lake and i am not alone. There are lots of people out walking and people on skis being towed by their dog. I am mystified by 2 grooves in snow covered path around the lake. Its not till a skier passes me that i realise what the are for. Yes, for you to ski in the grooves. How clever, they are compacted quite hard by a machine of some sort.
So now i have my bearings for tonight i walk back into to town for some lunch. Such a quaint little town. Lots of really beautifully buildings and homes. The main street seems to have heated foot paths either side. It can be really slippery on non heated paths, as they dont grit the roads or foot paths. Nearly slipped over plenty of times.
Its just on 2.15pm and no more sun light, its gone back to being very dark. So its back to the apartment to write this blog. Cant wait till tonight, fingers crossed there will be activity. It is looking good. It will be a cloudless night. It will be very cold, -15c. All these are necessary for the lights to be seen. The forecast for the aurora activity is a 2 to 3, which means a good chance to see them
