Brenton Kovacs's Travels
Today i am off to Killarney. It is the start of the Ring of Kerry Road, plus it also has the Killarney National Park. Its only a short drive, about 100ks. Nothing really exciting along this road. I arrive at the camping ground in Killareny at midday and pitch the tent and make my bed. With this done i take a drive to the start of the Gap of Dunloe. Its only a short 10k drive to the car park. Now for the hard part, a 6 to 7k walk into the gap going gradually uphill. The scenery is pretty spectacular, as it was all carved out by glacier activity. There are plenty of people doing part of the walk, but the further in i go the less people, till i am alone.
I just miss seeing a horse cart fall apart and throw the 5 occupants onto the roadway. Everyone was ok, but a little shaken. With that rather strenuous walk done i head over to Muckross House. The gardens are quite nice. I did not pay to go inside the house. If i paid to see inside every attraction so far i would be well over 100 euros out of pocket. So i am content to see from the outside.
Next stop is Torc waterfalls. The falls are certainly nothing special, but the 3k walk up the hill and around the falls is very nice.
Last night was rather chilly, i heard on the radio it might dip to 4 degrees. The new day is cloudy, but dry. Today i am going to drive the Ring of Kerry road. Its about 180ks round trip. I get an early start so as to avoid all the tourist buses that start leaving form 9am. The scenery is nothing special till you get to the very end of the peninsula. This is where you get to see some pretty nice views. The road is very narrow in parts, so one must be very careful with oncoming traffic, lucky there isn't to much.
When i arrive back into Killarney i spend the rest of the day wandering the streets of this nice, but very touristy town. I also take a long stroll into the Killarney national park to see Ross Castle and plenty of deer as well. Such a lovely park, with heavily perfumed air from all the flowers in the fields. That does it for another day. Tomorrow its back onto the road to Galway, with some nice scenery along the way.
