Brenton Kovacs's Travels
Today its a drive heading north from Killarney to Galway with some towns in between. There is nothing really exciting about this leg of the journey. I can tell you that some of the roads here are really bad, as in rough, narrow and not too many straights. Sometimes it is really good when the road surface is ok and the road is continually changing directions. Most of the locals always seem to be in a hurry, so i have been tail-gated a lot, and its very hard to get out of their way when the road is only 1.5 lanes wide. In fact it seems most of the Irish are always in a hurry on the road, and do not adhere to any speed limits.
So i arrive in Galway, and find the camp ground for my 2 nights stay. The first night is absolutely glorious. The sun is out, its warm, no wind, and there are people walking along the beach promenade, which is where the park is. I have tea sitting on the lovely grassed area where my tent is, enjoying a nice salad and some smoked mackerel.
Well how things change overnight. Its cold wet and windy. Typical Ireland i have been told. Nothing much planned today, just look around the town of Galway.
Well i did not sleep much at all last night. I can put up with rain, but the wind was a pain in the butt. The noise of the tent flapping away made it hard to sleep.
So i am up early and luckily it has stopped raining, so i can pack up without getting wet. The drive today is about 200ks north to Donegal, and then west to a tiny little village called Glencolumbkille. Its very isolated, and has some amazing views of cliffs and the Atlantic ocean. No more camping tonight, as i have booked into a hotel for $25 a night. The place is really nice considering its location. I take a short drive to the end of the road to see some stunning views, and plenty of sheep enjoying the grass. What a place! It is certainly not a major tourist destination because of its remoteness, but boy are the views worth it. Man am i glad to have chosen to come to this remote spot. I took a walk into town via the sheep path along the top of the mountain, and walked back along the road, about 8 ks. Nice afternoon for a walk.
I was talking to the guy that runs this hotel and he told me the weather here yesterday was atrocious. I did expect the west coast to be wild wet and windy, but was hoping to avoid it. One night is all i really had to suffer.
There was a mobile hotel in the camp grounds that can cater for 39 people. As you can see from the pictures the little bedrooms are like a capsule. It was full of German tourists. They would stay up late and get up early. Not sure if its my way to travel.
