Today saw the bad weather pass to bring another perfect day in FNQ. We left before sunrise and headed off in a northerly direction for the 45 minute drive to the Daintree River ferry crossing. As we crossed the river as the sun rose then another 45 minutes of winding road through dense tropical rain forest being very vigilant of the local Cassorwary's crossing the road (didn't actually see one though) saw us arrive at our destination at Myall beach
We were checked in and handed a wetsuit then shown the way to the beach through the rainforest and at 8.30 a speedboat appeared and transported 25 of us to McKay reef about 23km east of Cape Tribulation. The views of the hills of the rainforest meeting the ocean as we left in the morning sunlight were magnificent
25 minutes later we arrived at the reef and spent 2 hours snorkeling in 2 separate locations. The beauty of this trip was the small numbers, the speed of geting there and the fact that they are the only ones who go there and have only been doing so for 6 months. The reef there is pristine. The water clear as a bell. Hundreds of fish of all kinds shapes colours and sizes and to cap it off 3 magnificent turtles and several stingrays with the coral coloured bright yellow and blue. We have been lucky enough do do quite a few of these types of trips over the years around the world but this was one of the best. Only dissapointment was no sharks. Never mind we will do another one again in Cairns so maybe !!
Lunch at the local backpackers hostel then a slow drive stopping off at all of the beaches and lookouts on the way back to the ferry capped a great day. We will sleep well tonight
