Strange day today.
We are parked a couple of metres from the Ionian Sea looking across to Zakynthos. The wind is gusting and the sea is looking fairly rough and we (me probably) are feeling a little a little hard done by that the sky isn't clear and the sea that turquoise colour that you dream of, but we're sitting eating breakfast about a metre from the beach in Greece in March. We are so lucky.
Then Daniel looks out and spots a huge sea turtle at the waters edge and we tentatively walk across the beach to take a closer look only to realise that it is actually not alive. Sea turtles feed and nest all along this coastline, we didn't think we would see one but we certainly hoped we wouldn't see one like this.
This afternoon, we walked for a couple of kilometres down the beach and were shocked by the amount of plastic rubbish washed ashore. We have been learning about plastic pollution this year and the impact on marine life, it has been a big part of the Bob curriculum, led particularly by Megan. We made a family new-year resolution to avoid single-use plastic which has been very hard to stick to, making us realise on a daily basis just what a huge issue this is. We have picked up plastic on the beach and streets in France and Italy over the last few weeks and have decided to beach clean where we can to try and make a small difference but the amount of plastic that was littering the shoreline of this little bay in Greece was massive. We can only assume that most has washed ashore in the storm and we have no idea whether this played any part in out turtle's demise but it certainly had me in a very reflective mood as we returned to hide out from the thunderstorm.... the Gods seem very angry in Greece tonight!
