Page Arizona was our next destination after leaving the North Rim and so far it has not disappointed. Since getting here we have seen rocks that look like toadstools, a dam thats only ten foot shorter than the Hoover but equally as impressive, a massive horseshoe bend in the Colorado River, entered the local lottery and joined the madness that is Antelope Canyon Tours!
Lets begin with our lottery ticket.... Whilst researching Page online we came across this rock formation called 'The Wave' its pretty amazing but the Park Service only allow 30 people a day to hike to it. Before we left England we applied online for one of twenty places but were unsuccessful. So our only other option was to drive 30 miles across the boarder into Utah, through timezones to a small shed and to take part in a lottery for two of the last ten places. The only problem is about 50 other people showed up... Feeling hopeful we completed our form only to be given the number 13!!! The 9am cut off point came the doors were locked and out came the bingo balls..... The room fell silent and it was over in seconds, we were not successful but then there is always tomorrow.
In the middle of the desert would you expect to find toadstools? Thats what we thought until we hiked along a dry riverbed, they are rather strange rock formations, but check out the photos, not much more to say...
Next the big bend is a bloody big bend in the Colorado River and everyone we have met has told us to visit it, so we did today and it is indeed a very big bend but very beautiful check out the photo.
The Glen Canyon Dam, well neither of us have ever seen anything quite on this scale, its bloody massive. We drove over the bridge to get to the lottery and didn't realise just how high up we were, and only went into the visitor centre to use the 'restroom' loo for everyone back home! But when we saw how precarious the bridge looked we didn't fancy driving back over.... We also didn't realise that there were dams almost as big as the Hoover in America.
Finally, today we visited Upper Antelope Canyon, somewhere that Ben has always wanted visit and photograph, so when he realised it was close to Page it was a must see. Because the Canyon is in Navajo land you are not able to visit without a 'guide'. So we had not choice but to go on a proper organised tour, the only problem is about 500 other people do the same thing everyday... To say it was busy was an understatement but as you can see from the photos we did manage to find some quiet spots during our time in the Canyon. It was everything we hoped it would be and more. What we didn't realise was that the Canyon is still part of a river system and is prone to flash flooding and tourists have died in the canyon, but they didn't tell us that until we were on our way back to Page!! We feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to visit the site. See if you can spot the heart of the Canyon from the photos!
Tomorrow we will try our luck again with the lottery for 'The Wave' and do a hike through one of the deserts other storm drains, Wire Pass, before heading to Monument Valley.
