This morning we got up and drove to lighthouse (most western point - to complete the set) of the north island. Whilst leaving the campsite the view of Mt Egmont got more frequent until you get on to the south road where for the rest of the journey it never leaves site. This is the first snow capped mountain we've seen and it's a doozy! With the mountain dominating our view the whole way we pulled off the main road and down to the coast, once at the lighthouse we took some amazing photos and we were soon back on the road and on our way to Stratford. When we got to Stratford we grabbed a pie and then made our way up the mountain road to the Stratford plateau. From here you have an unblocked, unfiltered, amazing view of Mt Egmont - this is some of the best scenery we've seen and we spent a while just staring up at the snow topped peak. We got a few snaps and drove back down and on our way to Lake Taupo, we did however take a slight detour along the Forgotten Highway. This is a ridiculously long road with only slight remnants of towns with some absolutely incredible views. This really gives the impression of a forgotten road and with a warning sign at the beginning informing you there are no fuel stops on the 150km road it really makes you realise just how remote it gets. The super twisty roads take you over mountains and under them, through gorges, over rivers, on what seems like a never ending sensation for the eyes. Some parts resemble the moors at home only on steroids! We finally made it to Taupo and by now we were all tiered and ready for some sleep so we camped up, chucked some soup on the cooker, chowed down and then got some sleep! Another incredible day we will never forget!
