After yesterday it is nice to see the trains working again! We got up early and are now at the Vatican. We have seen the Sistine Chapel and after the Pope has finished talking, we will be able to see St Peter's Basilica.
Matt is a little disappointed that Benedict didn't park his Popemobile out front so he could take a photo. I told Matt that the Pope lived here so it's in the garage.
Ok bit later now so we saw St Peter's Basilica - it's enormous! There were also more creepy dead bodies of ex-popes in clear coffin things. Ewwww again! There is the body of John Paul II but he is all sealed up in a tomb - yeah! The basilica is built on top of St Peter's, the first pope and Jesus' favourite disciple, tomb. You can look down at the site but that's as good as it gets! It's super crowded in there and doesn't have a lot of reverence as throngs of people are pushing through. But it's a beautiful building and the crowds are reasonably well maintained given the size.
The Vatican is guarded by the Swiss Guard - these are seriously looking guys dressed in clown and jester outfits. I'll try to upload a picture but if not google them - very entertaining!
In the afternoon we headed back to the Colosseum. This time we got in and had a wander around the ruins. It's amazing large and hard to fathom how it was build without cranes and technology. Now it's nap time, we have sore feet and legs so a siesta is in order!
