We drove around South Mission beach and checked out the area before heading further up to main Mission beach. On the way down there were signs all over the place for Casowary crossings. We made sure we kept our eyes peeled, as (other than destroying your van!) apparently they use their massive claw to tear your stomach out! lol... As you can imagine, everytime I heard the slightest rustle in the bushes, I was ready to jump back into the van! ha ha...
We found a nice clean campsite with a pool and wifi, just one road over from the beach. We had only planned on staying there for a couple of days before heading up to Cairns but we fell in love with the place and stayed for an extra day.
We took a nice 5 minutes walk into the town, had a drink and planned to go for a pizza and a bottle of wine that evening. After dinner we walked along the beach and just enjoyed the scenery.
The next morning we decided to set the alarm for wake up and watch the sunrise. It was absolutely stunning and well worth getting up for. The sky went bright red for about 5 minutes and we got some amazing photos and then went back to bed, just because we can.
We bought half a kilo of fresh prawns from the little van that drove into the campsite and had a gorgeous treat for lunch before going for another long walk along the beach.
The day we left there was a cute little market across the road and I bought myself a silver ring with a bright green stone from a couple who had mined it themselves and said it was only found in Australia.
We were really gutted that we had to leave Mission Beach and both agreed that it was our favourite place that we'd been so far in Australia. A definate must do again!
