Cairns was only a short trip from Kurrimine Beach. As we pulled into our caravan park we were pleasantly surprised! They had given us a lovely site under some trees...although it was a bit tricky getting onto the site as it was so small!
Some of the things that we did in Cairns were the markets. The first night we headed into Cairns and went to the night markets there. It was a little disapointing as it was mostly made up of souvenir shops and cheap massage parlours. The only good shop was a beautiful gem stone shop that sold lots of pendants and earings. We didn't buy anything there on the first night which was a shame, but nothing really caught our eye.
The next day we took Charli into the Karanda Markets which were fabulous! Mum had been there only a week or so before and had told us to have a look. We were allowed to take the dog all around the markets and even the under cover ones which made things much easier for us! I bought some great prints, a musical instrument, a fan and a necklace and Andy bought a harmonica, which he is learning to play! :) We enjoyed a lunch of German sausages and beer and made our way home.
We decided it was time to spurge on some seafood for dinner again, so we drove to a shop that the man in the gem shop suggested. We picked up 1/2 kilo of prawns and some bugs. We enjoyed the seafood and a few beverages while sitting outside watching the footy.
On our last day there, we decided to spend the day in Port Douglas. So in the car we hopped for the hour drive north. We had a lovely walk around and had lunch at the pub which overlooked the chapel on near the beach. Beautiful! After lunch we made our way to the other end of the main street to check out the beach. Crocs and stingers (and no dogs) we didn't go for a swim! hehe There was a fabulous ice-cream shop where we got a snack from. Andy finally found his jaffa flavoured ice-cream, but it was sorbet...he wasn't happy!
On the way back from Port Douglas we stopped off at Pretty Beach and had a chat with a local that was there with his wife and dogs. He let us know that there weren't crocs around that area and Andy took Charli in for a swim. I was still wary, so I stayed on the sand. Charli had a fabulous time playing with her new friend.
We also swam in the pool at the caravan park and Andy went for a ride around Lake Placid. Apparently there are HEAPS of crocs in there...so he didn't get too close!
