Passed through a few towns on my bus including mooloolaba. i was meant to be staying here a night but cancelled it after looking at the hostel reviews! Seemed like I managed to see most of the town by coach though so not a major issue :) kinda missing having oz experience as it would be pretty nice to know what I'm looking at as we are going along. Arrived in noosa late afternoon on Wednesday (finally!) and me and a few others were collected from the bus by the gagaju bush camp mini bus. It seemed as if everyone on the trip was given this tour in their trip packages from travel agents as a freebie so nobody really had any idea what to expect.... All I knew was that it was a three night canoe trip. Stopped off on the way to camp to get our three days worth of food, the first sign we were going to be off the beaten track just a tiny bit. And we certainly were! Twenty minutes after leaving the camps nearest shop we got to their driveway, a very long sandy track leading down past a couple of long stay campsites before heading in to a very dark and gloomy looking little camp. First impressions weren't amazing I have to stay.... As soon as we stepped outside we were being eaten alive by mozzies and our 'hostel accommodation' was a few little camp bunkbeds in a room infested with all kinds of bugs. I know I'm travelling and can't expect the best but this definitely made me miss my home comforts!! By the time we got there there was only really time to eat and have a quick chat to the others in the evening. I took myself off to bed pretty early to try and save a bit of energy for the 7am start the next morning.
Despite three applications of repellent during the night I still managed to wake up with almost 60 bites.... So as much as I wanted it to, my bad mood hadn't really lifted the next morning! We were rushed out on to the canoe trip pretty rudely by the staff despite us seeing no real rush in us leaving except giving them a bit of peace and quiet..... The weather was good to us though and we set off on the 16km trip up the river in the gorgeous sunshine. The views over the Noosa Everglades were beautiful and the whole trip was very peaceful, with nothing either side of us except hundreds of trees. We stopped on the other side at a beach for lunch before making the same journey back again along the river.
Once back at the bush camp, we headed to an abandoned clay mine near the camp. Rainwater has filled all the old holes so the whole place is just clear blue pools and mudbaths! A very lovely way to cool down and also good fun :) plucked up the courage to join the others in jumping off the cliffs as well.... Decided if I couldn't jump 20m in to a pool there's no way I'll be able to do a bungee!!
Managed to avoid the morning 'goonover' that a lot of the others had but can't say that I had a good nights sleep so the second early start was pretty painful - thankfully the journey on the second day was much shorter. Canoed the other way up the river and parked up on a bank before a hefty walk to the beach. Stopped off on the way at a giant jumping pillow.... Definitely makes you find your inner 6 year old pretty quickly :D
By the evening I was feeling a little more settled. Although I was still looking forward to escaping the endless mozzies, I wasn't itching to get away like I was on the first day. Had an enjoyable last night with everyone before a slightly dodge nights sleeps in the tents.
Left the bush camp first thing this morning to come to Halse Lodge backpackers in Noosa town centre. Just have the day here to have a look around. Hoping to do the coastal walk when it's a bit cooler. As much as I'm loving the weather I'm just praying that it stays this nice for Fraser Island next week and whitsundays shortly after... Pleeeeeeeease!!!!!!!! Amy x
