Yesterday we headed to Jean-Talon market in Little Italy but there didn`t seem to be a great deal around. Then we headed to the Sherbrooke and Beaudry areas as there was a couple of Art Deco buildings I wanted to see but again I was a little disappointed.
Today the weather was deceiving; the sun was shining and there wasn`t a cloud in the sky but it was bitterly cold! Tomorrow it`s supposed to be even colder, it could possibly be as cold as minus 8!!
We decided to head back to Mount Royal park today to check it out after all.
The park was inaugurated in 1876 and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted who is the same guy that designed New York`s Central Park and many other major parks in the US. We had a walk round, went to see the Chalet Du Mont Royal which has great views overlooking Montreal, and we went to see the Cross atop Mount Royal which was erected in 1924. It is a huge cross which is lit up at night and represents Maisonneuve (Montreal`s founder) and his promise in 1643 to carry a wooden cross to the summit of Mount Royal if the young colony survived flloding.
I didn`t think it was a particularly nice looking cross but it is quite impressive in terms of it`s size`- it is 30 metres (98 feet) tall!
We went to the park`s cafe after this and had a much needed hot drink and a slice or should I say a slab!! of the nicest marble cake I think I`ve ever had :)
