We had planned to go to Mont-Royal park today. We wanted to see the Oratory of St. Joseph which we thought was in the park. Turns out it wasn't. We found it eventually though. It is one of the world's most visited shrines, and the basilica's dome is second only in height to Saint Peter's basilica in Rome. It is over 100 years old and came about because of Brother Andre, who was a humble member of a congregation that wanted to offer everybody a place for prayer dedicated to St.Joseph. Brother Andre helpedso many people and his reputation quickly grew around Canada. When he died one million people came to pay their respects to him!
The building is beautiful on the outside. We had a brief look inside too but the interior wasn't on the same scale as Notre Dame in terms of beauty.
We decided to skip the park after this as apart from a couple if cemeteries (which date back to the 1800's or something) I don't think there was that much to see there.
We decided to go and have a look around Prince-Arthur Street and Square Saint-Louis in Sherbrooke. During the 60's the street used to be the 'Hippie Haven' of Montreal. Around the square are all the old 19th century homes that are really unique and quite quirky looking. They used to attract the well off French Canadian families in the early 1800's.
Also around the square were the fattest grey squirrels I've ever seen!! Not only that but there were so many of them and they were not at scared of us- infact they kept coming over to us. I thought one was going to run up my leg at one point! I was making a sound to call them over and they practically started flocking towards us! Had it not been for the scene in 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation' I don't think I would have been freaked out! haha :)
There are a couple more things we want to see in Montreal but after that I think it will be time to move on. I need a change of scenery- I am getting rather fed up with cities now. I'm hoping that Quebec will give me a much needed boost.
