We have said farewell to the open waters of the 'gulf' and will most likely not see the ocean until we reach Darwin. We enjoyed our few days in Karumba amongst the 'die-hard' fishermen. Alf & Bob managed to catch enough fish for a delicious dinner for the four of us and didn't get taken by any crocodiles...so that was worthwhile! It's been quite hot up here now with temperatures in the mid to high 30's at times. The doona is now packed away!
So we have continued on the Savannah Way through Burketown and the 'don't blink or you'll miss it' Gregory Downs, where we stayed last night. The previous night, we stayed at Leichhardt Falls (no water running though), which was a picturesque rocky escarpment with cliffs down to the sandy beach and beautiful water. Mind you, even though we were hot, we were not tempted to have a dip! We managed to drive the car and van over the rocks and set up a perfect spot with a campfire and views to die for - expecially with the full moon that very night!
The roads have been pretty good, although we managed to get a 'tiny' stone chip in the windscreen while on the bitumen which has now developed into a large crack! The birdlife is amazing - brolgas, black cockatoos, cockatiels, eagles, etc ( I could list a whole page!). We came across a gorgeous little calf all on its own - unfortunately it won't survive and we couldn't take it with us :( Gregory Downs had a wonderful 'free camp' by a clear, flowing stream - the perfect place to cool off! Next stop...Lawn Hill National Park.
