After roughly a silent, (I somehow resisted the temptation to mock her for her previous nights activity with the older gentlemen) four hour journey to Freemantle, I left Rebecca and the campervan which had been my home for the past two weeks or so. I can't say I was sad when I left, infact quite the opposite, when she was out of view there might have even been a fist pump. It felt good to not have any shackles on anymore and be able to go my own way. I decided that the next time I was looking for a road trip buddy I would be more selective rather than just with the first person.
I didn't do much for the rest of the day, as I was pretty tired and was pleased to have a proper bed and a pillow instead of a fuel canister, even though it was decorated with Tinkerbell everywhere. I explored town, caught up with friends, and met an Irish chap called Cormac who had just returned from Bali, and like me, was also looking to head up to Darwin.
The next day after a well-earned lie-in, I decided to visit the much talked about Freemantle prison. I did two tours, the doing time tour which lasted an hour and fifteen minutes and detailed how prisoners spent their time in the prison. This was fun apart from me getting picked out for a demonstration at the start where the tour guided pretended to do a cavity search on me. The next tour started immediately after and this was called The Great Escape tour which was also interesting as the told you about the prisoners or convicts who tried to escape the prison, such as Brendan Abbott and Mundane Joe. All in all it was a great tour and I would highly recommend it, I also got told the torchlight tour at night is pretty impressive and rather spooky as the prison is allegedly haunted.
After the tour, I saw an advert for a place where you could try and learn to play the didgeridoo for free, so I thought yeah why not, let's give this a try. I did. It was bloody difficult and I struggled with my technique. For some reason I couldn't get my lips to vibrate enough. I then looked a bit of loony around Freemantle as I tried to perfect the technique, but to strangers I just looked like I was making weird noises.
Still with time left of the day I decided to head to Round House, which was the oldest public building in Western Australia. They made it sound pretty impressive and that they had a good cannon that was so loud the whole town could hear it. So I thought I would check it out. It was very disappointing. The cannon was tiny and the building not as near as impressive as they made, so I made my way back to the hostel via a chicken sandwich. When I got back I called Becky in France and caught up with her for around an hour and three quarters, which was very nice and we had a good laugh. Then I met up with Cormac at the hostel bar and had a couple of beers with him and beat him at pool. I then retired for an earlyish night as I had to checkout in the morning and had a train to catch to head to Perth.
So until next time stay safe and take care
Adi
