Our trip ended perfectly with a hike at the cliffs at the end of the road in Hanae Park, the furthest you can drive north on the island of Kauai. The beach has incredible waves crashing against the rocks and hikes that are supposed to be some of the best on the island. We stayed away from the hikes there because there had been some pretty bad injuries due to all the rain in the area while we were here. The hikes are beautiful but relatively treacherous along the cliff side. We were able to easily climb among the rocks and capture the last sunset of our trip. It was beautiful.
During the day, we spent most of it surfing at Hanalei. The view of the sea and the cliffs was incredible, and you could see the rain clouds sitting on top of the cliffs above as new waterfalls spouted all over the cliffs. It was amazing! We took back the boards late afternoon, and drove up some of the local trails to see some of the waterfalls closer up before hitting the end of the road for sunset.
It was pretty funny that we got mistaken for locals just about the entire trip. People asked us for our kamai'na card or number, for directions, and tourists kept asking us for information. I couldn't figure it out then Jeff nailed it - we don't look rich enough to be vacationing there! There is a big divide between the rich and poor in Kauai, and I didn't mind looking the later.
We ate some ono ice cream for dinner and headed back to do laundry and pack.
