MATT: So after our big night out with the locals it is a seriously slow start today. We eventually drag ourselves out of bed at about 1pm, breakfast slowly then hit the road. Our first stop is to see Caroline at Felton Road to thank her for the fun night and pick up some directions that she has put together for us. Next stop is to see Larry at his coffee shop for a slice of the Apple Cider cake he was bragging about last night (also for Kelly to get a wheat grass shot...which is the foulest thing I have ever had in my mouth...including Cambodian crickets).
We make a drive South to the Catlins for a night of free camping...it is a good 4 or 5 hour drive south through ever changing scenery again and some interesting wee towns. Alexandra, Roxburgh, Dumbarton, Lawrence and Balclutha (which seems like the home of the mullet and some seriously rough old women - we were warned that we might witness a few people whos uncles were also there brothers in their town...it didn't disappoint).
An hour or so beyond Balclutha and through some seriously remote countryside, and some pretty bouncy, unsealed roads (which invalidates our insurance) we get to our little beach. This is a little sheep field with a long drop toilet right on the beach - no campsite luxuries. Apart from the dead (blue) penguin we find on the beach, this is a nice quiet stop for the night and waking up in the morning with views over the beach is pretty nice.
