MATT: As we leave Dunedin behind and head North, the clouds break, the sun comes out and we drive into Oamaru.
Oamaru is a funny lttle town that sells it self as NZ's Victorian town - as it has a small harbour and dockside that are all Victorian. It is also home to the Blue Penguin - which is the town mascot.
We get to a very nice little camper site and head straight out for a walk in the sunshine through the really nice public gardens on our way to the Whitestone Cheese Company to enjoy the local cheese scones, cheese and bacon pies and cheese cake...oh and cheese...
When fully cheesed up we go and explore the Victorian buildings of the town centre and docks...including a nice, small art gallery that used to be one of the towns banks, a second hand bookshop that used to be a dockside warehouse, and the home of New Zealand Whisky - which used to be a dock side grain store. Although Kiwis make great wine and beer - they make bad whisky...but it's nice to try it.
Feeling a bit warm inside from the sampling - we head back to the camper site to drink one of the bottles of wine we picked up in Bannockburn and make everyone else in the camp kitchen jealous by having a couple of steaks with mushrooms - cooked perfectly.
