MATT: Ok...so after all the build up, Dunedin was a bit of a let down. We drove up from the Catlins in sunshine, after a stop off to have a short walk (Kel's legs still creaking from the Milford Track) to a very pretty waterfall and a stop at Nuggett point to look at the seals, lighthouse and yellow eyed penguins, but as we approach Dunedin the weather gets really bad. Typical Scots chose the greyest, wettest place in NZ to build their city (n.b. the picture is really not representitive of our Dunedin experience.
Even though the city is named after Edinburgh, all the street names are after Edinburgh streets and there is a statue of Rabbie Burns in the town square - the city is pretty dull. We basically don't get a good impression generally...this added to the fact that it is built on a series of the steepest hills I have ever driven (the steepest residential street in the world is in Dunedin) and I almost burn the clutch out trying to get enough torque to get away from lights and junctions, which makes the van smell like it is on fire and is the source of a lot of driver seat-passenger seat based shouting.
Eventually we make it to the ony camper sites in the city and they are both pretty s***...so we choose the least s*** and settle for the night cold and damp.
After expecting our NZ homecoming, it is the least favourite place on the trip round NZ and we are pretty happy to get out of there early the following morning.
