After 1 hours sleep, Adrian came into our dorm and woke us all up at 7.30am!!! This was meant to be my long lie I had been looking forward to since Kenya. Not a happy bunny. A group of them were all going sand boarding or sand dune surfing but I had opted for a quiet morning and my Township Tour wasn't starting till 3pm.
Since we were all awake, Grant and Phoebe lay on my bed and newsed about last night for a good hour or so. I had such a fantastic night. One of my best nights out on the trip.
There was Nicole, Clare, Phoebe, Grant and I left, so we decided to find a cafe somewhere that did cooked breakfasts to help get rid of any hangovers that were going around :) Adrian and the bar ladys advice was to go to the 'village cafe' and it was AMAZING. Just what we were all needing. It was a funky cafe that had very random decor and the waitresses were so friendly.
After the walk back to the hostel, it was time for a power nap before my tour started. I tried to phone Mum before going for a sleep but the wifi signal was really weak! Grr. Anyways I only managed to get 1 hours sleep :( and when I woke I felt worse that ever. So so tired and could have slept for hours.
If I hadn't already paid for the tour I probably would have given it a miss but in the end I was so glad I went. It was fantastic and so interesting. Nicole, Sam, Randa, Simone and I went and our guide was called Beetle, was a fine sized group.
In 1904 when the Germans colonised Namibia was when a lot of the traditions and tribes died. We went to the Township where in 1959 all the black people were made to move out of the city to the township by the government. They all had to leave their homes and were forced to move. This didn't end until 1990, so very recent when this ban was removed. Most elderly people wanted to go back to their homes in the city but they then found hotels and shops etc where their homes used to stand. The Township was still where the vast majority of black people live.
We then went to the informal settlement which was very different compared to the Township, this is where people live in shakes if they are unemployed and can't afford to move in the township. Both villages were in the middle of the desert on the outskirts of Swakopmund, the informal settlement had no electricity or running water and it looked similar to the slums in Nairobi if you swapped rubbish for sand.
During the tour we got to meet 3 different tribes, and ask questions about their dress and traditions. We met the Chief of the Township who was a 86 year old lady. Very interesting, she looks after her great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, 5 generations in 1 house!
Then we went to a local pub in the Township, since it was a Saturday and an African Public Holiday everyone was off work. Loud music and BBQ's were happening at every pub with a happy atmosphere at them all. Alcohol is a big problem in Namibia apparently. Beetle bought us a few ciders or beers in the pub which did me the world of good, hair of the dog and all that :)
Then this is where the tour got interesting. We were taken round the side of the pub and into a very small round thatched building, where a local Nama lady prepared traditional Namibian food for us. We started with a local drink, that's made from plant material (it was horrible) but it turns into very strong alcohol if left for 5-7days. Then the food was put down infront of us, spinach, beans, pup, worms and caterpillars!! The worms and caterpillars looked just like what people eat on the TV programme 'I'm a celebrity Get Me Out of Here' or whatever it's called hehe.
Nicole and I were the only 2 in the group that gave them a try and we actually ended up eating two each as they tasted much nicer than they ever looked. If they were in the form of a dish or you couldn't tell they were worms and caterpillars they'd of been lovely.
It was then back to the hostel for a quick shower and get ready for another night out in Swakopmund. We went to Kuckies tonight for a group dinner, and I had Ostrich Fillet which was really tasty. It was going to be my last chance to have Ostrich meat in Africa so thought Id pass on the beef fillet since I could have that at home anytime.
After two ciders I was just about sleeping at the table. I decided to head back to the hostel at 10.30pm with Phoebe and Nicole to have an early night. Even though Clare, Randa and the boys tried to persuade me otherwise. I was very close to being convinced in staying out but I knew I made the best decision as soon as my head hit the pillow :) Very proud of myself having an early night!!! hehe. Phoebe and Nicole sang Disney songs the whole way back to the hostel... was ace fun!
I sorted out my rucksack etc when I got back and tidied up all my things as we were leaving first thing in the morning.
Swakopmund is an amazing place!!!!!! I will miss you xxx
