I was delighted I had an early night last night and felt so good when I woke this morning. The guys that stayed out, came back at 4.30am and were super loud. It is impossible though for 5 people to come back into a 15 person dorm at that time of the morning and not make any noise. It was quiet funny listening to them though.
We headed south on a 10 hour transit day to the Namib Desert the oldest red desert in the world. The scenery was just desert as soon as we left Swakopmund. Sand dunes for miles and miles.
We then stopped at the 'moon landscape' for a picture late morning, the landscape was now very rocky and bare. The Namibians say this is what the moon looks like, an amazing contrast from the sand dunes. The rocks were so shiny and they use the powder from these rocks to make make-up!
The roads today must be the worst we have been on, horrendously bumpy. Dads 'new old road' is better that this.
We then crossed the Tropic of Capricorn line, so got a big group photo there. It's the line that goes round the world and splits the southern hemisphere in half (I think anyways, might have to research that). If you stand at this point on the 21st December you won't be able to see your shadow!!
We had a road side lunch stop before carrying on through to the campsite that we are staying at for 2 nights!!
We got there mid afternoon and we were really in the middle of the desert. It was so hot, it might have been the hottest day I've experienced yet. The sand was burning your feet everywhere you walked and there was hardly any shady spots to put up our tents! As soon as we had the tents up, we all went straight for the pool as it was far too hot to do anything else. The pool was amazing or maybe it was just the cold water that was amazing but 12 of us spent a good few hours in the pool :)
After a shower, Phoebe, Randa and I sat in the shade next to the truck with a glass of wine chillaxing and chatting about everything possible. It was such a fantastic few hours before tea. Chris had prepared a South African dish for tea which was one of the best meals we have had at the truck, it was so tasty and different!
The wind had been quite strong in the afternoon so basically our tent was full of sand, not the best ideas to leave the window flaps up when sand actually goes through the mosquito net! Whoops.
It was all good though because we have been talking about sleeping on the roof truck since the start of the trip, so tonight was the night!!! Phoebe, Nicole and I would sleep under the stars on the truck roof in the Namib Desert! Exciting :)
Getting up on the roof was the hardest part especially after a bottle of wine. Chris and Adrian passed up our sleeping bags, mattresses, water, bug spray and biscuits then we were all set!
We had such a laugh but it was surprisingly comfy. We watched the moon come over the horizon and slept under the stars :)
What an exciting night in the red desert that ill never forget xxx
