I felt much better today even though I had been awake since 4.30am, but I listened to music until it was time to get up at 5.30am.
After breakfast we headed south to the gates of Etosha National Park where we exited, we saw loads and loads of giraffes as we headed to the gates. We then went to Outja for a supply stop, while Chris did the shopping the rest of us all went to a bakery for a cup o tea and a cake :)
Today we were heading south west towards Twyfelfontein for the night, which was a stopover between Etosha and Swakopmund. After leaving the town of Outja the roads completely changed from bumpy tarred roads to dusty/hardcore tracks that were bumpy plus plus plus.
Apparently the rest of the roads we will be travelling on in Namibia will be like this. The scenery was fantastic though, driving through the valley with mountains and rolling hills at either side of us.
We stopped at the side of the road, where Adrian showed us the Welwitschia tree, this is the only place in the world that they can be found along this stretch of road. They are between 800 and 1500 years old with the main part of the tree 15/20 metres under the ground. All you can see is a shrub type plant that is 2 foot high with 2 very rubbery type leaves. Very interesting stop indeed.
We arrived at the campsite in time for lunch. It was basically in the middle of the bush and the temperatures were soaring. It was far too hot to stay in the sun so Phoebe Nicole and I took our mattresses into the thatched bar area with our books and music to relax but yup you guessed it... We all ended up falling alseep because it was so hot.
This afternoon the whole group went to see the bush men's rock engravings that date between 2000 and 6000 years old. It was a tour which lasted an hour in the scorching heat but I coped no problem as there was a nice cold breeze the whole time. The rock formation was so impressive and the animals carved in the rocks were very distinctive.
Tonight's shower was certainly the most interesting yet, I was delighted that Phoebe and I went to shower together after we had seen what was the shower. It was 3 taps under the tree with no cubicles or curtains and it was a mixed gender block. When I looked up all you could see was the tree and blue sky, I did wonder if I would spot a leopard in the tree... But no :( Luckily none of the guys came for their showers at the same time!! Phew!
We shared a bottle of rosé wine with our meal and then headed to the bar for the evening. Chris made bread again in the fire but this time with garlic and cheese - it was so gooood. Another GAP truck had arrived too, so the bar was really busy for a short time. Most of the group played cards all night but Phoebe, Grant, Mike and I just chatted and the guys played pool.
It wasn't until 12.30pm we headed to bed but the rest didn't stop playing cards till 3am!!! I was on a mission to rest up before hitting Swakopmund. xxx
