OK so we all know it gets cold at night in the desert but really... It's not meant to get that cold when we are sleeping outside. At about 2am (according to Adrian) the temperature dropped dramatically and it ended up being freezing! I didn't get much sleep at all just because of how cold it was.
We had a 4.30am alarm this morning, and our alarm clock was Adrian switching on the truck engine with us on top! I'm glad we managed to sleep outside but honestly I'm sleeping in my tent tonight. If we were more prepared with jumpers and long trousers etc I think it would have been fine but we were all in our short shorts pjs! Haha so basically we weren't prepared at all.
It was an early start as we were heading further into the Namib Desert to climb Dune 45 to be able to watch the sunrise over the red desert from the top. It was a tough climb but when we got to the top it was certainly worth it. We climbed in bare feet as this was the easiest way when the sand was still cool. All 15 of us sat on the ridge of the dune in a row watching the sunrise. It was spectacular. It was so high so you had to be careful not to fall down either side. hehe.
We had to be back down by 7am where Chris had prepared a cooked breakfast for us. We didn't feel so guilty eating it after the exercise we had just done!!!
Then we headed deep into the desert where the truck was unable to go. We had to take 4x4 land rover taxis into see the Deadvlei and Sossusvlei these are two types of areas right in the middle of the red desert. The Deadvlei Was spectacular. We had a 30minute walk to reach the area but it was surrounded by huge red dunes. We had an hour to take photos and walk back, so we got most of the group to stand on the ridge of a dune and jump in the air while someone took a photo! It turned out brilliant!!
We headed back to the camp for lunch as it was getting too hot to be able to do anything. It was 37 degrees and today was cooler than yesterday, so wonder what temperatures we reached yesterday! Straight after lunch Phoebe and I took our mattresses into the camp bar area and slept for close to 3 hours in the shade! I felt amazing after it, managed to catch up on the sleep I didn't get last night :)
It was a bit cooler by 4pm (Still absolutely roasting though lol) and we went to the Sesriem Canyon, I thought it was spectacular too as I hadn't seen anything like it with no water in it. We went down and walked along the bottom which was cool. Tomorrow we are going to the second biggest canyon, next to the Grand Canyon, in the world which will be fantastic. The Sesriem was 15/20 metres high and 4km long. Can't wait to see the Fish River Canyon tomorrow.
The hot dry heat makes your skin totally dry out and your lips all crack with the heat. It's crazy - we were warned about it but I never expected my skin to get this bad. We are having to oil our skin 2 or 3 times a day here. Its horrible because then the sand just sticks to you - nice or what!! :)
Fillet of beef for tea then everyone headed to the bar! Phoebe and I went to the tent with a bar of chocolate and Jason's IPad to watch Love Actually!!! :) So much more fun than another night of drinking!!! Everyone was jealous of our cosy DVD tent night but noone was getting to join us haha.
Goodnight Namib Desert! xxx
