I started the day with a call from Adz at 6.30am :) just after we had breakfast! It was ace speaking to him and he got my hopes up about hopefully managing to bring my flights forward so I don't have so long in Cape Town! Fingers crossed.
Our transit day was a long one, we were on the truck from 7am till 3pm with only a short stop over for lunch and bush toilets! It was a long one but certainly the best truck journey yet!!! Grant, Phoebe and I spoke about everything, travelling, girlfriends, boyfriends, jobs and in the end we all made 'new' 'African' life plans!!! Well Phoebe certainly did. Grant gave pretty good advice too, we had some really deep and interesting conversations haha. So much fun.
After reaching camp we had an hour to set up camp and chill until we had to be back on the truck to go and see 'Fish River Canyon'. Compared to yesterday's canyon this was unbelievable, 100km in length, 27km maximum width and 549m maximum depth!!!!!! The second biggest in the world after the Grand Canyon and it was truly spectacular. We were dropped at a view point to take photos and told to walk back along the ridge to where the truck would pick us up. If this was anywhere else in the world I'm sure there would be safety barriers everywhere.. not Africa though!
There was a really strong cold wind and it felt like home :) everyone else was freezing but I found it so refreshing! We slowly walked back to the other view point chatting and taking photos. When we got there we were given an ace surprise!
Chris and Adrian had layed out a spread including 6 chilled bottles of CHAMPAGNE!!! There was a huge selection of cheeses (including Brie), biscuits, crisps, olives, nuts, small sausages and sweeties!! It was fantastic. There was a prize for the wildest person in the group which was a bottle of port that went to Grant. That ended up being shared around after we finished all the red wine that was on the truck.
While we were having the time of our lives we were watching the sun set over the canyon with our glass of champagne! It was so much fun. I will never ever forget this afternoon. The ATC truck also rocked up, but their group didn't get any special surprise from their guide or driver, we shared ours though to all the 'cool' people on their truck.
Clare figured out that Sarah from the ATC truck is on the same flight as me from Cape Town to Jo'berg and then to Sydney!!! If I don't manage to change flights, we're going to make sure we're next to each other and have drinks on the plane together :) how ace will that be! Plus she's going to be in Melbourne for New Year so that's another option for hogmany!! So many options!
We eventually had to leave the Canyon :( all rather tipsy after the champers, red wine and port! There wasn't a bar at tonight's campsite so we all sat around the 'bush tv' till late drinking the drink that was in the cool boxes on the truck.
This is our second last night camping. It has been such an amazing trip, I really don't want it to end. When I decided to head to my bed, I found my tent was already occupied!!!! I was homeless in Africa :) Luckily Matt had a tent to himself next door so I found a sleeping bag and slept there. We chatted for ages, he had high standards to live up to, to reach Phoebes tent buddy status! :)
Such a fun afternoon and evening! Only 3 sleeps left of my trip... I'm gutted. One thing I do know, is that the next 2 nights are going to be just as much fun as tonight!
Sleep tight Namibia! SA tomorrow xxxxxxx
