Day Thirty-five 18.4.05 We had to get away from the barking dogs so we packed up the awning last night to set off early. Good job we did because it rained last night. No time for breakfast, we would get some on the way. We stopped on the motorway at a service station got some diesel (very cheap, 93cents a litre) what we didn't realise was it was an automatic pump where you enter your credit card first and it was us the tannoy was talking to, trying to tell us our mistake. It was then that we first had problems with the credit card. We also had a bit of a mare with the lady in the 'restaurant', we tried to order ham and cheese toasties (which were on the menu) and she just wasn't getting it. After much pointing she shouted though the service hatch for our toasties as if it was totally unreasonable to be asking for such a thing at a 24hour 'restaurant'. When the toasties arrived we thought we would also have a couple of the crispy sausage things the previous customer had ordered as well. The toasties were ok but the crispy sausage things were really strange. The best way to describe them is a large crochet potato with meat substance and stringy bits. Feeling fuller than expected we continued on to Vila Nova de Milfontes. We set up camp after being efficiently directed to our pitch. We are in a pine forest just 600 metres from the sea. We can't see it but we can hear it in the background. The site is advertised as being close to the beach. What it doesn't tell you is that the site is fully surrounded by a six foot fence and the only access to the beach during 'winter' (anytime between September and July) is via a road that is about 5 miles long. Fortunately although the weather is better than the last site its still not beach weather. We went to the supermarket to get some food and the credit card failed again. Then the Switch card failed and we paid with cash. The bank got an ear full and a message was left on our bank manager's voice mail to get it sorted a.s.a.p. Lets hope its just a simple fix because otherwise were scuppered!
