Wills and James Road Trip
Day Thirty-seven 20.4.05
The weather although still agreeable was not as nice as yesterday. We couldn't think what to do today so a lazy morning and then a short drive to Porto Covo to have a look. It was quite pretty with a decent beach. The amount of parking suggested that it gets busy here in the summer.
We drove back to Vila Nova de Milfontes to have a good look round. Its very picturesque around here and the town is quite traditional. The centre is a mix of homes and shops. Unfortunately because it is so early in the season most are closed and the ones that are open are the ones who clearly didn't make enough money last season. One look at the stock for sale indicated why they were still working whilst their competitors were still sunning themselves somewhere else.
We tried to find the supermarket we had visited yesterday on foot, after about half an hour of walking in circles we got back in the van and drove the 200 metres to get there. We Didn't need much but thought we would get some more of that cheap wine that didn't give us a headache and perhaps some fish.
At the fish counter the attentive lady waited for us to pluck up the courage to ask her to prepare some fish. She didn't know what we were talking about and no amount of gesticulation was going to tell her. She called over to her colleague for assistance. She spoke perfect English and obviously enjoyed the extra attention she was getting today and the opportunity to practice her English. She asked the fish woman to prepare the Dorada which she managed with a few snips of her scissors and a good tug with her thumb and forefinger. We don't eat a lot of fish at home and the fish we do eat is very much pre-pared.
We grilled the Dorada as it was with its head and tail still on and it tasted lovely. I think we shall be eating a lot more fish in the future.
