Wills and James Road Trip
Day Thirty Four 17.4.05
We went to Obidos today, its about 10 miles from the campsite and we set off quite late as we had dogs barking and music all night and not much sleep. Boiled eggs for breakfast, no soldiers though as out of bread and no shops nearby. Shame.
Obidos was as lovely up close as it was from the motorway, it's basically a medieval fortress almost entirely preserved. The first thing we did after negotiating the hoards of tourist coaches was to walk the walls. They are about 1.5km long and were an ideal way to appreciate the scale of the 'Borough'. Not many of the tourists were doing this, perhaps because the warnings on the way up to the top of the walls suggest extreme caution. They are about thirty feet high and a metre wide with no barrier to one side. The uneven surface also added to the excitement. William was getting annoyed with people coming the other way and assuming that they could keep to the safe side whilst were wedged nearer the edge so he stood his ground and made them walk nearer the edge, even the frail and weak.
The weather wasn't on our side today and it did rain a bit. The photos in the guide book show it in glorious sunshine with blue skies, we tried hard to imagine it whilst the shops were doing a roaring trade from tourist getting out of the worst of it. We brought a rug and a plate that we didn't really need.
Having said that there were lots of lovely little shops selling lots of unnecessary little things. There were also a fair number of bars and restaurants to choose from. We decided as it was raining to have a meal in a popular restaurant with views over the countryside. (Fillet Salmon steaks with sparkling white wine sauce!) no room for pudding.
After lunch we headed for the Lagoon of Obidos, a body of water about 2kms wide and 6kms long and connected to the atlantic most of the time. We drove round the entire lagoon which probably looked better in the sunshine. On the way back to the campsite we had hoped to visit the supermarket but it was closed (This must mean its Sunday.) Beans and eggs for tea.
