I flew to Vietnam this morning, I left the hotel at 4am spent an hour on the flight, and a hell of a lot longer waiting for my baggage to appear on the carousel the other end... I swear it was slower than Gambia!!
When boarding the plane at Bangkok we had to get on a bus from the gate to the plane. It took about 20minutes and it was the strangest journey. It was like it took us through the plane graveyard!! There was so many planes with engines missing, windows missing, no tail, half a wing, flat tyres, no nose, no doors. I was getting a little spooked thinking is my plane going to be safe to take off!! I know I booked a budget airline but this was crazy!!!!
All was ok, and I got the hostel to pick me up to avoid the taxi scams that are apparently rife at the moment. The naughty taxis kidnap you and take you to another hostel for commission, and if you refuse to pay them a higher rate they stop in the middle of nowhere until you pay.
Vietnam is hot!! Hanoi is a nice little city but other than museums there's not much to do. I went to the national history museum and it was good to learn about the Vietnamese war, and it seemed the brutality of the US only stopped in 1975, which is mad to think it wasn't that long ago. It seemed like everyone had a go at these poor people, first the French then the Japanese joined in then the US came in on mass clean up missions, the pictures were not nice! But that seem a happy little country and very friendly in the streets :)
I've booked myself on a tour to Halong Bay in the morning and then Sapa when I return :) so back on the crazy Malaria tablets.
