Arrived at Santa Clara after the longest four hours ever including lots of random stops and a Mel Gibson movie in Spanish with Portugeuse subtitles....couldn't figure out why we were attracting so much attention on the bus until we read that the Astro buses are strictly for Cubans and somehow we had ended up the only tourists on board!
Bit of a c*** up when we arrived at the casa which had been pre-booked by our lovely family in Havana, to discover the wily old crone had sold our room from under us, so after a few stern words from us, her son walked us to another place with a hot Barbie pink bathroom where we were greeted by the friendliest midget and her cross-eyed larger sister.
Explored the little town the next day, not that there was all the much to explore, and caught a bici-taxi with the oldest man driver in the world still capable of riding a bike who slowly, oh, so slowly peddled us to the official Che memorial and museum for a spot of Cuban culture. All very serious business....guards everywhere protecting Che's remains from wannabe body snatchers and stony-faced women protecting the exhibits from human breath. Viva Che!
In the afternoon we monged in the main plaza and watched all the local oldies dance to the band including a super cool dude who must have been at least a bottle of rum down and danced entirely on his heels much to the jealousy of his fellow old folk.
That night we sampled our first homecooked casa dinner, a huge fab feast of lobster, soup, rice, fried banana and chocolate icecream accompanied by the dulcet tones of Elton John. Dinner surely does not get much better than this!
