Another mammoth journey from the top of the peninsula to the very far south and after three buses, a ferry and a minivan we pulled into Montezuma - our much anticipated antidote to Playa Coco. Checked into the jungle cabinas of Lena Lluna for the night high up in the hillside overlooking the village and fell straight to sleep to the startling screams of the howler monkeys outside! We ended up moving in the morning after being woken super early by builders making new cabinas but landed on our feet with a funny little apartment full of granny furniture right on the beach for less dosh! Obligingly stuffed the fridge with beers and set about working on our tans!
Mostly chilled out and lazed around drinking beers at sunset in the hammocks and eating our cornflakes on a little bench overlooking the sea! Montezuma is a really cool little village with wicked beach, a few restaurants, one very loud bar and plenty of hippies selling woven stuff from stalls along the street.
One day, we took a speed boat tour 40 minutes along the coast to the protected Tortuga Isla for a days snorkelling, sunning, BBQ fish on the beach and one of only eight waterfalls in the world that falls directly into the ocean plus pure white sands and turquoise waters. Later that evening we had a fun meal with some fellow beach goers and played cards by moonlight on the beach. It's a hard life!
Another day we hired a quad bike and spent the whole day bombing around the little villages and along the coast line on well fourdy-four pit holey roads all the time on the lookout in the hope of spotting either Vince or the fellow Mal Pais village resident religious nutter Mel Gibson! Had such a great day, stopped off for breakfast coffee in the little village of Cabuya and then headed to the surfer villages of Mal Pais and Santa Teresa where Tim chilled on the beach while I rented a board and tried out my recently updated surf skills. Managed to achieve third degree burns on my face along with grazed knees and an aching back, but also managed to stand up pretty well too!!
One tasty sushi lunch accompanied with some free yoga moves to ease my pain and we were off on our adventure again. Stopped off at one of the most incredible beaches we have ever seen, Playa Hermosa, just swathes of white sand and blue sea edged with pure jungle....amazing! Just disappointed we were forbidden from driving our little bike on the sand....boo hoo! After picking out which part of the beach we would build our dream lodge we carried on to the sleepy village of Manzanillo...another totally undeveloped place with a lovely horseshoe bay and a perfect beachbar with hammocks and swings right on the sand where we watched the local fishermen bring in their day's catch with a well deserved beverage.
Bombed it back home in the dark under the stars for an hour to Montezuma with Tim driving like a demon after three beers, a jug of sake and three whiskies and cokes while I clung on for dear life!!! Top day!
On our last day we climbed our way to the lower waterfall and swam in the pool.....some people climb up to the next waterfall where you can do a massive 100 foot leap from the top into the pool at the bottom....being the fannies we are... we were content monging in the baby pool at the bottom!
