Today is the day; the first physical activity we have done in a week other than lift a kingfisher to our lips!
We met Hannah and Jon at our hotel, they were staying here for the night; lovely to finally meet them! :)
We went to the restaurant across the road to meet Manu, our guide. He must have cracked a deal with the owners so that he could keep using their restaurant as a meeting place. We tried our wet suits on (so claustrophobic when dry) and put our trainers on that he gave us for the day. Scott put his wet suit on backwards so the zip was on the front and not the back, he was having a little problem with it haha! We all had a big water proof bag with holes in it, our helmets and harnesses where in them. Manu got Scott a helmet with the go pro attachment on it which was good!
7 of us jumped on his jeep and headed off to the jungle for about a 45 minute drive. Scott loved the greenery, and how green everything was!
We went through an Indian village up in the mountains, Manu has been doing this years because he knew the locals quite well even though he could only speak a small amount of Goan. He picked up his Indian friend who was going to be sat watching the truck all day, he had two bottles of water and multiple packs of fags - priorities, of course!
We kitted up in our wet suits and trendy trainers, left our spare clothes in the truck and headed off. But before we started the French guy that was with us in the group had to pee, and came running back out of the bushes pretty much screaming; he had only peed on a tree snake! It was sort of illumious green, I was pretty happy to say away from that! Manu picked it up and put it around Scott's neck for a photo, he loved how green it was!
He was a good guide and never stopped talking and mumbling about anything! He knew his jungle well, there were lots of plants we had to stay clear of because they were poisonous and if the spikes caught your skin you could get infections from them!
After about 20 minutes of walking through the jungle we found the water! It was like finding treasure! Fresh, cold, clean water! I couldn't wait to jump in!
We had a safety briefing, Manu admitted "ughh I am French. I am a pervert. I will touch your bums to push you, that ughh goes for the boys aswell, (cheeky smile at Scott) I am not shy." Haha!! He was so funny.
First abseil.. Scott hadn't done one before so he was a little nervous; he done okay, he just didn't lean back far enough to stop himself from sliding and falling into the rocks. The next was a 3 metre jump, we threw our bags into the water below and they just floated around (that's why we weren't allowed to bring anything not waterproof! It would be soaked by the end of the day!) Hannah was a little nervous about jumping but she done really well! Off we trotted down the river to the next jump or abseil! (Scott said he loved how green it was)
The next jump was 3metres but inbetween two rocks, a little tricky! Hannah put her foot too far to the right and slid of the rock onto another, we thought that was it she had broken something, because she fell awkwardly; she battled on though! After that she had a leech on her hand so Manu said the only way to get them off is crush their head; put it on the rock, get a stone and crush it in between them. Haha! The jumps were so good, I jumped off a 5metre ledge but Manu had to push me; Scott said I was so close to smacking myself on the rocks, whoops! We came to a really steep rock with a 10 metre drop, Manu asked us to slide down the rock and hold on the rope; to be fair he was quiet when he spoke sometimes and his accent was strong so not perfect English. Hannah, came sliding down the rocks (not holding the rope) aw it was so funny! She nearly took his legs from under him; best bit was that she really enjoyed the slide, I think for a second I heard her shouting 'weeeee'! Many wasn't impressed I don't think, if he had gone over the ledge and hurt himself we would have been pretty much screwed because we were in the middle of nowhere!
The last abseil of the day was 'a surprise' we went 3/4 way down abseiling then the rope had finished so you had to just fall on your bum, backwards. Muggings here... "Bet you first come wid me" awwww cheers!
The whole day was so much fun, we saw shredded snake skin around the river and wrapped around trees, but thankfully we didn't see many leeches or poisonous spiders!
Crazy thought on the way back through the jungle - Manu didn't have a phone or flares or any thing to help save us if something had gone wrong or is he had gotten injured or knocked off a rock! All he had was a waterproof camera and a stick. So there is no way if he got injured we would be able to find our way out to get help.
Manu also said that bear grylls man is "s*** absolutely poo poo" (in his thick French accent) he says you can't eat poisonous leaves without cooking them, absolutely rubbish, you will die! You have to cook them first!
I knew it! Bear Grylls is only your big standard scout collecting his badges!
Bloody extreme survival guide my bum!
On the way back down the German pole dancer ruined the whole seating plan in the jeep because she wanted to sit in the back, so bloody awkward! I'm not sure she enjoyed it much. She moaned that she was cold the whole way around!! - get over it and just pee on yourself or swing your legs around a tree!
We stopped in that little Indian jungle village where he picked his friend up from earlier. We had an omelette sandwhich and kingfisher, it was gorgeous!
Sandwhiches - 15ruppees
Kingfishers (large) - 60 ruppees
I felt like I was ripping them off not the other way around!!
The pole dancer wouldn't put a T-shirt on to cover up her stomach after Manu asked her. I thought it was a little disrespectful, and surly she felt a little uncomfortable herself? Then she started dancing around the pole holding the shack up, oh deary me! I think it annoyed Manu a little, he went inside and apologised to the locals I think.
He comes here everyday with people, so to keep them sweet he takes his customers there to buy some food and drink which I think it kind of nice but he doesn't want a bad reputation or any conflict with them.
To top the day off, Scott had a blonde moment!
(Earlier on in the day, Hannah and Jon said they wave to Lizzy every morning, because they can see Windsor castle from where they live, in Windsor.)
So Scott later said...
"Hannah, I can't believe you live by Buckingham palace! Right by the queen like!" (Looking at her in a shocked and unbelievable look) we all just laughed so hard! Bless him I think the greenery got to him! (Because he loves how green it is here) haha!
We went to rococos for dinner, we sat on the beach with candles everywhere; it was nice but difficult to see what you were eating. Or was that the idea!?
Palolem is a little behind on great electricity lines here still, what Scott refers to as it being a bit like the third world country, electricity wise. As every now again our electricity in the room goes off, every time it goes off Scott is in the shower so he can't see a thing, Haha!
There are so many lights and bars on Palolem beach, then all of a sudden the whole of Palolem is left in complete darkness. This happened to us whilst we were eating and by now the candles had burnt out aswell so it was literally just the moonlight, even that wasn't bright tonight. Trying to getting our torches up on our phone, as soon as we did our waiter appears at the side of the table! They must be so used to people just legging it when this happens!
The electricity came back on eventually and we went to cocktails and dreams for a 50 ruppee game of pool! We lost miserably to Hannah and Jon, 3-1 victory! I blame the cocktails that went to my head! Haha.
