Hey all,
Lets talk about the desert.I saw the English Patient the other day(did NOT like the movie), and came to the realization that, in many movies such as the English Patient, the desert is depicted as this exotic, romantic place.Stargate, The Mummy, Raising Arizona, Aladdin, Lawrence of Arabia, Raiders of the Lost Arc, etc. They all make the desert seem to be this romantic place, where people gleam with sweat and take their shirts off while talking in the lovely sand.Though we might have awesome sunsets, the desert is NOT ROMANTIC.Everyone puts on more clothing, though they are sweating a liter of water an hour, to prevent skin cancer or heat rash the length of their body. And because every one is so hot, wishing they could take off these layers, we all get irritated very fast, at each other, and frustrated with our lives and the constant reminder that its never going to cool down.Everyone smells like they haven't showered in days, though they used the last bit of their water to cool their hair, which evaporated in 10 minutes. And the sand.THE SAND! Don't get me started on the sand. Its literally everywhere. You can expand on that with your own imagination. Everything is dirty all the time, the sand burns your skin any time after 8 am, and your retinas slowly become permanently damaged. For the life of me, I cant figure out why anyone would reside in a place that has no access to the one essential to life, water, or why hasn't anyone asked themselves "why am I living here again?" especially when there is no air conditioning, swimming pool, nor green trees and sweet soft grass.
So the next time you see a movie that takes place in the desert, remember that those actors probably hate their life right now, pretending to be happy in the desert. That's what I think.
PS. Don't worry, I still love my site!Pisco and chocotejas, how could you go wrong with that?

Your Mom Good observations and thoughts, Teig. The snow is always portrayed as bleak - which it is. Sand gets too much benefit of doubt. There is one more aspect I think should be added. The proverbial oasis is always portrayed as being like a tropical resort in the middle of the desert. I did not find the reality to be true. The water at these oasis spots is a little scary.
Djuna Gulliver First of all, what were you thinking watching the English Patient? Were there no rocks to poke at that day? Second of all, in the Mummy, the desert had flesh eating bugs and zombies which I did not find romantic. And third, I completely agree with mom. Oasis's are gross. They have all these swampy weeds and UTI producing bacteria in the water. I'm scared of oasis water!
