Santorini is essentially what remains after an enormous volcanic explosion that destroyed a formerly single island, and created a giant central rectangular lagoon. It is surrounded by 300 m high, steep cliffs on three sides. The caldera being 400m deep makes it possible for all but the largest ships to anchor anywhere in the protected bay.
This entry might be a bit boring. It's about the awesome hotel and relaxing we did for a couple of days... Although we had a celebrity spotting, so read on to find out!
We were welcomed by the Katikies Hotel staff warmly on our anniversary weekend and a home made lemonade with pink sugar around the rim was well received. This hotel is amazing. We were given a tour as we took steps down the cliff face passing other rooms, the cave pool and multiple levels for sunbathing. We got to the bottom with the incredible infinity pool, restaurant and many bar/pool staff awaiting your needs. The view literally took my breath away. I stood still until someone said to me, 'it's incredible isn't it?!' It was noon so we took a perfect seat to ourselves for lunch over looking the perfect caldera view and next to the pool and enjoyed their drinks and snacks. Their home made tzatziki was mmm... so good, like no tzatziki we've ever had before and served with warm pita. The cheese plate equally as good and I'm not that into cheese. The hotels manager introduced himself and made two special dinner reservations for the next two nights for us. He was very nice.
Our room door was on the other side of the pool. After lunch we were shown our room and it was fantastic. We changed into our bathers and took a prime positioned lounged chair by the pool's edge and stayed there taking pictures, swimming, relaxing and enjoying different cocktails (or Jack Daniels and sprite) each drink served with a bowl of fresh nuts. When ordering drinks from one of the five staff on hand, they knew our name and room number without us needing to mention it.
Dinner tonight was on the terrace of the hotel, a couple of levels above our room. Today's weather was very clear and the warmest they'd had so far. Usually dinner was inside with four tables only, but we were the first to enjoy the degustation menu in a more romantic setting. The view, food, drinks and service was so enjoyable. Our waiter became our friend for the rest of our stay. When he put our order in for drinks apparently the bar man said to our waiter, "Ah! He's back!" (because nobody else orders JD & Sprite.) Sean even chose some 'wedding' songs and popped his phone in the iPod to play at the end of the night. We were also treated to a glass of celebratory champagne and handmade chocolates which were incredible.
