Day 27 - Kakadu
We had a pretty restless night due to the heat and the mozzies and we were ready for another swim so off to Gunlom we went.
What a terrible idea! From our campsite it’s about a 70km drive each way and the last 35km is corrugated road which we hate! It took us over an hour to drive the last 35kms.
We were all very over it by the time we arrived but it was a place we loved last time so we wanted to see it again.
Unfortunately due to the not so wet ‘wet season’ there wasn’t much water at the waterfall (more of a trickle) which meant the top pools with the beautiful view over Kakadu were a bit dirty and we were advised not to swim there.
We were still able to swim at the upper pool so off we trekked up the hill. The first part of the walk was really easy and flat but then it got steep and climbing up and over lots of rocks. We finally arrived and the kids didn’t like it as it was too deep so we had a quick swim to cool off and then went to the top pools to take some photos and look at the view. We then walked back down and on the way down we had an eagle circling right above our heads and it was really low so was amazing to see so close up.
Once we got down we went for a swim at the bottom of the waterfall. We had a quick swim then thought we better start the horrible drive back to the caravan to meet Brendan. Again it took us an hour to drive the 35km corrugated road.
We got back to the caravan and the kids were very excited to see uncle Brendan. Luckily he only arrived about 10mins before us. We had lunch and then we took him to see Maguk (barramundi gorge).
We had another beautiful swim in the gorge and then we walked up the top so we could swim in the upper pools. Wow, they were so spectacular and the water was so clear and such a deep blue. We didn’t want to leave but again the sun was going down so we headed back.
We were all so exhausted after a big day and wished we didn’t bother going to Gunlom and had just spent the day at Maguk instead. On our drive back to the caravan Brendan spotted a dingo.
We had dinner and the kids watched a movie then we all went to bed early.
It’s still really hot and lots of mozzies again!
