While we were eating breakfast this morning Josh fell head first off the dining room lounge chair and flipped over and onto the floor. We don't know how he did it as he was laying down on the chair and next minute we saw him fall. He hurt himself a little bit but recovered quickly. We left our campsite around 9am and went to Maguk. It is a 2km return walk through monsoon forest and along a sandy and rocky creek which leads to a waterfall and clear plunge pool. The water was so pleasant and so the kids and I swam for a little while but Rog swam for ages and walked up the waterfall and found more rock pools. A couple we met leant Rog his snorkelling mask and Rog couldn't get over how many large fish were in the pool. As the sun continued to rise the water got clearer and it was such a beautiful setting. We could have stayed here all day but we had more to look at.
We moved the caravan from Gungurul to Mardugal campsite. I was worried that it would be really busy but there aren't many people here. We then drove to Yellow Water (which is part of the south alligator river floodplain) and walked along the boardwalk and saw fish, ducks, eastern great egrets, australasian darter, an eagle and other birds. We were hoping to spot some crocodiles but no luck.
We fuelled at Cooinda and then continued onto Anbangbang Billabong (one of kakadu's most attractive billabongs with Nourlangie forming an impressive backdrop). What a huge billabong full of wildlife. We also were lucky enough to spot our first saltwater crocodile which was sunning itself on the bank. We were pretty close as the walking path is the same level as the billabong so we were very cautious of the kids. It was fun to watch as it kept opening it's mouth really wide and then closing it again and then opening it again etc. We were talking to an older couple who had a great telescope so they showed us some birds and the crocodile up even closer. Some of the birds we saw were black necked storks (Jabiru), Australasian darter, eastern great egrets, pelicans, ducks, cockatoo's etc.
We then went to Nourlangie which is a 1.5km circular walk which takes you past an ancient Aboriginal shelter and several rock art sites. We went to Gun-warddehwardde Lookout which provides views of Kakadu's escarpment and Nourlangie. Bronte was very cute walking around the shelter and rock art as she insisted on carrying her handbag.
We then went back to our campsite for dinner (alfredo pasta with tuna, peas & corn), showers and bed. Whilst I was cooking dinner the kids had fun running through a sprinkler to cool off.
