Day 17 Alice Springs
Today was a sightseeing day around town with Mum & Dad. First stop was School of the Air. They showed us a movie, showed us the old radio systems they used, we looked at some artworks and then we got to sit in a live class. It was a year 6 maths class and my kids enjoyed answering the questions. We then watched the year 5 maths class and first the kids shared any news and one kid showed her new puppy and another kid showed his pet snake - Josh was in heaven! The Alice Springs School of the Air has approx 100 students.
Next stop was the old telegraph station and the kids had a little play in the Todd River (as there is no water). Then we went to Anzac Hill and admired the war memorial and the views over Alice. We then went to an art gallery called Tangentyere as they have a painting called ‘Abbott Camp’. Unfortunately it wasn’t on display so we just admired it in the brochure instead. Next we went to the grave site of Albert Namatjira. Such an amazing artist and his tombstone is of one of his paintings. We had fun walking around the cemetery trying to find it!
We then drove around the BMX track complex, the Showground, where they have the camel cup etc and the whole complex was huge. We saw lots of eagles and horses. Then it was time to get back to the caravan for lunch and so the kids could play with their friends. They rode their bikes for ages and then went to the jumping pillow and playground and then Josh went for a swim even though it was pretty cold.
Sadly it was our last night with mum & dad so mum cooked a yummy roast dinner which we had to eat pretty quickly so we could get to the night time entertainment. Tonight’s entertainment was an astronomer. They have a star talk facility which is equipped with a self-tracking telescope so we all got to see Jupiter. It was lovely star gazing but the clouds came over so we were lucky to see Jupiter.
