After a bit of a delay with the flight we finally arrived in Amsterdam. We eagerly wanted to commence our girly weekend so after stocking up on supplies at the airport we made our way to our Air BnB apartment on Singel Street. The climb up the narrow, winding stairs with our luggage and shopping was exhausting and we looked like pack mules scaling up the Himalayas. Our efforts were rewarded when we entered the apartment and although out of breath, we couldn't contain our excitement. Our home for the weekend was spacious, airy and modern. The lounge looked inviting and cosy and had windows that opened up to a lovely view of the canal. Once we unpacked and freshened up we headed to a nearby restaurant for dinner. It was close to midnight by the time we ate but we were famished. Although we felt quite tired, we could not go to bed without a trip to
Babylon for a decidedly smooth night cap whilst discussing our itinerary for the next day.
Unable to start the morning without coffee Jay and I went in search of a local shop while Tanya and Emma made a start on breakfast. It's all about team work and the 4 queens knew exactly what that entailed. We enjoyed the morning at leisure and once dressed, we spent the day roaming the streets doing a bit of shopping and sightseeing near Spui straat. There was a buzz in the air and the cafes were filled with people enjoying the mild day, listening to the jazz musicians in the small square. All shopped out we stopped off at the famous Bulldog cafe for a little break. We found a secluded corner in the depths of the establishment. It resembled a dingy prison cell with graffitied walls but its quirkiness was inviting. Yet again we remained transfixed with the surrealness of our surroundings and spent a few hours allowing MNEK to get us into the rhythm. Slightly dazed we mustered the energy and ambled back to the apartment to chill out. For some peculiar reason it seemed to take an awfully long time but we finally made it and soon enough we were sprawled on the couch
with a glass of wine in hand and the brilliant sunshine streaming in through the open windows. The mood was perfectly mellow and I'm sure our laughs could be heard in the neighbouring apartments. As the evening was drawing near we got suited and booted and headed to Amnesia for a pre-dinner cocktail of sorts. We had reservations at the Supper Club which is at the other end of our road, so we took a stroll along the canal to work up an appetite. It is in an old theatre hall and from
the outside is totally unassuming but what awaits you as you enter is a place that is more than a restaurant, a gallery, a bar or a club. It is all of it combined. You feel as though you are on a journey, starting first in the Mystical cocktail bar which is a darkened bar with interesting art installations. As you are called for supper, you ascend the stairs into a large hall with white washed walls and crisp white beds running along either side. We were shown to our bed near the DJ booth and all hopped in to enjoy an evening of provocative performances and artistic visuals whilst dining on a five course meal. The concept of the food is interesting and is more bite sized and hands on. It was exciting and fun and completely unique. After dinner the hall morphs into a club and we spent the rest of the night dancing to Deep House until all we wanted was to fall into a deep sleep.
The next morning, instead of the promised thunder showers we were greeted with brilliant sunshine which meant that our private boat trip would go ahead as planned. We made our way to the meeting point and when captain Baart arrived we were all rendered completely speechless. He was a beautiful specimen of a man with perfectly chiselled features and a smile that could melt the north pole. As he steered us along the canals for the next two hours we were all in heaven. We were
behaving like smitten schoolgirls instead of the mature young ladies we are. It was difficult to even hold a normal conversation and I don't think any of us was really paying any attention to the scenery. It was the perfect way to spend a relaxing summer's day and we were slightly gutted when the time came to part ways. We said our goodbyes and tried as gracefully as possible to disembark. As he sailed away we stood on the banks of the canal gushing so loudly that a nearby resident asked us politely to keep the noise down. Well, after an awkward telling off we giggled our way to the nearest Bull Dog cafe to dissect the day's events. It had been such a brilliant and fun experience and we couldn't have asked for a better day. It was perfect and as we walked back to our apartment our smiles were firmly pasted on our faces. Another chill out session ensued where we spent a few hours relaxing, listening to music and just enjoying the summer time vibe. We had dinner at Cow, where Argentinian steak was on the menu. Fed and watered we were ready for our last dance at Club Air and in the early hours after a lot of moving and shaking we called it a night.
We had the best time ever and as we checked out of our home away from home we said "totsiens" to the Dam and headed to the airport. We totally misjudged our flight time and had to run to the gate to board our flight. Luckily there was a delay so we had a bit of time to catch our breaths and cool and compose ourselves. We had yet another fantastic weekend away with an ever increasing amount of great memories to share and look back on. We are on a roll ladies, can't wait for the next one.
