Our very final day in Mexico! (I hope it's for real this time! :p)
Visited two villages just outside San Cristobal this morning; Zinacantan and San Juan Chamula. Went with the Belgian, Fanny.
In Zinacantan we went into this place where they make typical Mayan clothes and textiles. Saw this woman weaving something, not sure what it was meant to be lol! They gave out some kind of alcohol in shot glasses which wasn't very nice after a few sips!
Then went to another room where they were making flour tortillas and we tried some with various fillings which were nice!
We then went onto this cemetery where many Mayans were buried and it was so colourful unlike typical English cemeteries so it was nice as it shows a celebration of life.
In San Juan Chamula we went to this square where loads of Mayans were gathered together and setting off really loud bangs, nobody was sure what they were exactly! Went inside this church where we weren't allowed to take any photos out of respect. Really disappointed about that as it would have made good photos! Never mind. There were many Mayan families all gathered together in their own groups lighting loads of candles with hay on the floor.
There was a market outside where they were selling various things; fruit, clothes, handiwork etc.
Went back to San Cristobal and chilled out for a short while before heading to the cinema with the others to watch Dallas Buyers Club. It was in English but with Spanish subtitles so I could not follow one bit! Only went to be sociable lol!
After we came back we went straight to see a Mayan show called Pakal which was based in the ruins of Palenque. It had stagetext in both English and Spanish so I could follow everything which was great! It was a good show but couldn't enjoy it as much as I could as was feeling sick for some reason and just wanted to be in bed! Luckily it wasn't a long play so went straight to bed after!
Got a cough too! I'm very rarely ill and everything is happening to me here lol! Typical!
Off to Guatemala so got an early morning. Let's hope it goes smoothly this time :p
