What. A. Day.
You wouldn't believe this! Still in Mexico unfortunately. Left at 8.30am and didn't get back to San Cristobal until 6pm having achieved nothing!
It took us about 3 hours to get to the Mexico-Guatemala border. Went by minibus. Paid our departure tax and got stamped out no problem. Drove on for about 10 minutes reaching the Guatemala border where the minibus dropped us off and left to head back into Mexico. We then found out that the Guatemala immigration officers were on strike! So we couldn't get a stamp to go in. We could have easily got in without a stamp but would have got fined when leaving Guatemala which we didn't want.
So after hanging around for over an hour with many other travellers wondering what alternatives there were to enter Guatemala, we decided to head back into Mexico and back to San Cristobal. So got a taxi back to the Mexican immigration office, filled in an immigration form just like the one we did when we first arrived into Mexico. Got another entry stamp. By the time I leave Mexico I'll have 4 Mexican stamps in my passport instead of 2! Lol!
Then we hung around for a bit trying to work out what transport to use to head back until our minibus just happened to go past us! So we were very lucky and hopped in. He could only drop us off halfway so we had to find another minibus to take us the rest of the way. FINALLY arrived back at the hotel we stayed in for the last 2 nights and luckily there were rooms available.
After a VERY long discussion about what to do (3 hours), we finally decided to get a flight into Guatemala. So on Monday we'll fly into Mexico City and then to Guatemala City. Hoping to be able to claim back on insurance. Fingers crossed!
This means we'll miss out on visiting Panajachel. Gutted about that as was really looking forward to it as it's by the lake with really interesting villages and meant to be beautiful. Never mind! Will then head to Antigua, our last destination of this trip.
We had a very late dinner after eating nothing all day apart from breakfast! Went to this Italian restaurant opposite the hotel and had a lovely pizza which made up for it!
So we will have to entertain ourselves tomorrow! Decided to go and visit the villages in the morning.
Off to grab some sleep, knackered from a VERY eventful day!!

Mum Oh no what a real shame. But hopefully you get to see Antigua. Can't believe your first leg is almost over but what a trip it has been so far. Love reading your blog. Xoxo
