This morning we went up to this little village called Mystras. This was once the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The fortress dates back to 1249. Sue and I walked through the ruins of the lower half which really is quite spectacular. We then drove Betsy up to the top. If you look at the first photo it shows the fortress sitting right on top of the hill. The top carpark sits underneath the fortress. Sue thought it was going to be to hard going for her so I climbed right to the top. If you look at the photo looking down onto a carpark you can see Betsy which will give you an idea how high up this fortress is. It makes you wonder how on earth did they ever get all the materials to build this thing up there. I only had to get myself up let alone carry a 40kg rock up there. They must have been an extremely fit that's all I've have to say. The whole site would have to rate as one of the most spectacular we have seen.
Left there after lunch at one of the local Tavernas ( Calamari for me Greek salad for Sue ) and drove the 40 kms south to this beautiful campground at Gytheio. Right on the beach front. Tomorrow we are going over the peninsular to a place called Areopoli.
