Gazza has asked for some stats...
1,012 miles covered
68 mls/day average
Speed. Travel mostly at around 16mph. Although the daily average (which includes slowing town in towns and consulting maps) usually comes in at 12-13 mph.
103 miles - longest daily ride (twice)
283 miles - best consecutive 3 days
Lost on bike - 3 times
Lost out and about on foot at night - 2 times
The route. We wanted to start at Calais and to finish at Marseille (because it rhymed). Along the way we wanted to visit Ypres, Verdun and Besancon. Beyond that the route was flexible. For example we never meant to go as far east as Nancy and the Moselle valley, but it seemed a good idea when we looked at the maps on the preceding night
GPS equipment - none (but sometimes able to recover position by, the malfunctioning, iPhone 4S)
Cheapest hotel - 26 euros for the two of us
Most expensive - 80 euros + 9 euros for parking bikes!!
Breakfasts - cereal, croissants, yoghurt, fruit and coffee
Lunch - stuff filched from breakfast bar plus fruit growing along route. Figs. Apples. Mirabelles, grapes
Dinner. Usually nice resto. Beer + wine
In ride nibbles - mixed fruit and nuts from back pocket. Plus chocolate and/or flapjack stops. Plus gallons of water!
Physical problems - stiff necks only
No one fell off. But JC got some bruises from when we had to clamber down overgrown banks to get off the odd motorway (in France, so often a normal road just turns into an Autoroute! Alarming!)
Days of rain - 6
Headwinds - most days
Tail winds - twice
Mistral - once
Punctures - none! Kevlar tyres (a little heavier but tough as hell)
Chain off - once (Steve's)
Best place - Marseille (by far). Amazing place. Felt safe out and about late at night. Also nice places - Besancon, Nancy, Leon and Dole
Worst place - Stenay. Closely followed by Mauberge
SG rode a Dawes Clubman
JC rode a Trek 750
Both used SPD cleats
Medication - daily 75mgs aspirin. Ibuprofen tabs as required. Salvon cream applied each morning to prevent chaffing and saddle sores. Also electrolyte tabs on long hot days.
SG lost 6 pounds in weight
JC stayed the same weight. She, ("I only drink Sauvignon Blanc") developed a healthy interest in Rhone valley reds, esp. Cotes de Rhone. She also tried, and liked duck. But, strangely, developed a liking for Nutella!?

Gazza Impressive stats? Surprised you weren't up to your eyes in GPS devices as they're so common. And very decent daily mileages especially as I'm sure there were hills you didn't mention. I didn't want to say before you visited Marseilles but all the Frenchies I know in Toulouse regard it as the centre of gangsterism and low level crime! Maybe they have different standards to us Brits so perhaps we should go there on one of our hash weekends ( though the airport's a long way from the city, FC). Well done folks...... Gazza
